Public rally against alleged police atrocities held

TURA, 15 Nov: The All Dadenggre People Movement (ADPM) today organised a public rally for peace and justice at Dadenggre Civil Sub Division in West Garo Hills, denouncing alleged police atrocities and brutality meted out to the people on pretexts of anti insurgency operations by security forces stationed there. The rally was participated by a record gathering comprising of the Federation for Achik Freedom, Garo Students Union, Achik Mothers Association, Achik Youth Welfare Organization among others.

The rally demanded the immediate suspension of Dadenggre Sub Divisional Po e Officer (SDPO), Bruno A Sangma who allegedly is the instigator behind the atrocities meted out by the police on the people of Dambongre, Dugalgre, Dallanggre and Dananggre villages of the Sub Division.

Earlier a memorandum apprising the Meghalaya Chief Minister of the alleged atrocities and demanding the immediate suspension of the SDPO was submitted to Dr Mukul Sangma informed ADPM President Rupa M Marak who added that the erring officer was given a promotion instead of being suspended. North East Students Organization Finance Secretary Manseng Sangma informing the gathering stated that he had approached West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi regarding the matter and was assured that the demand was being processed only to find out later that the erring SDPO was given a promotion instead of a suspension.

The SDPO, Bruno A Sangma, has been accused by the people of allegedly harassing the people by randomly picking them up and beating them without any reason whatsoever on the pretexts of anti insurgency operations. Citing an example of an incident in dananggre village witnesses allege that last week during the village Wangala ritual, a team of Meghalaya police led by Sangma abruptly entered their village and beat them up, spilled their rice beer meant as an offering and ate all the meat meant for the annual Wangala Feast.

These are only some instances of police high handedness in Garo Hills informed GSU Central Executive Committee General Secretary John Miltu Sangma who added that the police in Garo Hills were willfully abusing their rights as enforcers of the law in the pretexts of anti insurgency operations thereby shaking the very pillars of democracy.(SP News)
