Shillong, June 07: The five organisation comprised of the, All Khasi Hills A.Chik Federation, Garo Student Union Khasi Hills Region, A.chik Holistic Awakening Movement South West Khasi Hills Zone, United A,chik Youth Federation met Education Minister Mr. Rakam A Sangma and submit their memorandum to place grievances for the Garo Community residing permanently in the Khasi Hills Regions.
In the joint memorandum they have mention,that there are large number of Garos permanently residing in various parts of Khasi Hills Region since time immemorial till today and many Garos have their own A.khings lands under the jurisdiction different administration and different districts.
That the Garo Community residing in Khasi Hills Region have equal rights and equal opportunity as provided in the Constitution same as with our brethren Khasi Communities of Khasi Hills, However, since from the enactment of the reservation policy in 1972.
The Garo Communities residing different part of Khasi Hills had been deprived of enjoying 80% reservation policy reserved for the tribal of Meghalaya particularly for three major tribe of the state namely Khasi-Jaintia and Garos.
There is no provision or any rule or notification issued by the State of Meghalaya to bar and to deprive the Garo Community residing in the Khasi hills Region from enjoying the benefits of the reservation prescribed for the tribal of Meghalaya since from the inception of the separate State of Meghalaya.
Being the leaders of various NGOs of Khasi Hills Region beg to submit the instant Memorandum on behalf of the Garo Community residing in different parts of Khasi Hills and praying to grant the benefits of 80% reservation prescribed for the three major tribes of Meghalaya, considering their background, economical status and permanent inhabitants in Khasi Hills since from time immemorial.
That there are many government schools operating in different part of Khasi Hills in Garo dominated areas and the government of Meghalaya have initiated or included the Garo medium to be taken in those government schools.
Surprisingly the teachers appointed to teach the Garo Mediums are Non-Garos and who does not obtain the degree or certificate of Garo (language subject) their academic studies.
It is stated that in the absence proper teacher for Garo medium schools, the students from Garo Community have becn finding difficulties in learning the Garo subjects in their academic studies, therefore, in order to avoid such inconvenience and to give benefits to the students of Garo community.
we humbly request your esteem office to take out the matter with the concern authorities and make an arrangement to appoint the Garo teachers to teach the Garo subject in various schools dominated by Garo community.
In the premises aforesaid, it is most humbly and respectfully pray that your Ministry may consider the grievances of the Garos residing in various parts of Khasi Hills Region and may take up the instant issue in your Government to redress the grievances of Garo community residing in Khasi Hills Region.
