Jowai, Jan 01: In commemoration of the 151th death anniversary of U Kiang Nangbah, the Jaiñtia Ïasiat Khnam Kiang Nangbah Memorial Society (JIKKNMS) today held several programs throughout the day including the wreath laying at the foot of the monument and statue of the Jaiñtia war hero.
A marathon, Slow Bike Racing and traditional archery were the events that drew thousands of participants from all over, while prizes ranging from Rupees one thousand up to five thousand were awarded to the winners and runners-up at a closing function held at Madan Syntu Ksiar (Madan Kmai Blai), alongside the Mihmyntdu River.
Gracing the function as chief guest, State Deputy Chief Minister Dr RC Laloo lauded the JIKKNMS for the success of the program in memoriam of U Kiang Nangbah.
Other prominent leaders who attended the function include Lok Sabha MP Vincent H Pala and local MLA Rubinus Syngkon along with Lumïongkjam Headman Dr DJ Kjam, Amw Dolloi J pyrthuh, and Reverend ER Tongper.
Many who spoke juxtaposed the imminence of U Kiang Nangbah with that of Nelson Mandela and that more should be done in his commemoration.
In keeping with the age-old tradition, to draw the curtains on the memorial event an open archery was held where young and old alike were provided with bows and arrows to shoot the one-meter-wide target from a distance of 17 meters. (SP News)
