The JSU call for transparency in giving information on COVID-19 in Meghalaya

Shillong, July 13: The Jaintia Student,s Union(JSU) said that as a growing concern to the rising number of people affected by the pandemic Covid-19 in the state, they would like to urge to the concerned authorities that in the interest of public service, the following concerns may be addressed, for the larger good.

The union appeals for a disclosure of the name of people infected, for effective contact tracing. Disclosure of names will ensure that people who have been in close contact with the infected may be able to disclose their contact and to avoid from the community spread transmission of COVID 19 and also to ensure following of precautionary steps or protocols laid down.

This is a call for transparency in giving information. With regards to the fiasco relating to the marriage of some individuals, it is suggested that video footage and photographic evidences from the wedding party will aid in the contact tracing exercise.

The state government is again urged to confirm whether Covid-19 tests for armed personnel such as the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Army is made mandatory or not and whether the quarantine protocol of 14 days is followed or not by armed personnel when entering and upon entering the state? In reminding the Government about the Press Release on 24th May 2020.

The JSU had urged the government to make screening of armed personnel mandatory for which it seems from the spike in recent cases relating to the BSF, the same was not followed. Therefore, the question arise as to why the suggestion was ignored.

That in the light of such events, while asking for public cooperation, the government should by itself ensure its cooperation first with the public. When far sighted suggestions were put forward by youths, why was it not implemented are they still in the reactive mode for the short-sightedness of our leaders, the underprivileged is now suffering.

The government has to address these concerns to the center to ensure that only bare essential movements of armed personnel into the state may be allowed. Also, a strong mechanism of ensuring strict quarantine protocol in all camps, headquarters, bases and barracks of the armed personnel is to be maintained. Movement of Personnel has to be allowed only after a proper certification by state health authorities said Mr. Tiphimi Rymbai Publicity Secretary in the press statement.
