The legal and constitutional rights of the Achik people must be corrected: CoMSO

Shillong, March 15: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) strongly condemns the inaction and political doublespeak of the National People’s Party (NPP) on the serious anomalies concerning the participation of non-tribals in the GHADC elections even after Eight years in power.

At a time when the rights, identity, and constitutional safeguards of the indigenous tribal people are under threat, the NPP has chosen to hide behind empty words, delays, and calculated silence.

This issue is far too serious to be reduced to another round of political drama and deceptive assurances. The indigenous people of Meghalaya are no longer willing to tolerate a government that speaks loudly in public but acts timidly when it comes to defending the interests of the indigenous tribal population.

CoMSO makes it clear that the NPP cannot continue to fool the people with promises of “looking into the matter” or “NPP will resolve the issue” while allowing confusion, loopholes, and legal uncertainty to persist.

If the NPP and the Government truly respects the autonomy of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and the rights of the Achik community, then it must prove it through immediate action.

The continued failure to decisively resolve this matter only raises serious doubts about the sincerity, commitment, and political will of the NPP-led government. A government that cannot protect the very foundation of indigenous tribal rights has no moral authority to preach about governance, justice, or indigenous welfare.

CoMSO therefore demands action, not another rehearsed statement for public consumption. The NPP must stop treating this grave issue as a tool for political management and start addressing it with urgency, honesty, and firmness.

The sanctity of the GHADC elections must be upheld, and any anomaly that undermines the legal and constitutional rights of the Achik people must be corrected without delay. The indigenous people are watching, and they will not forgive leaders who chose convenience over conviction.

CoMSO stands firm in warning that the patience of the indigenous people is running out, and a time will come that no amount of speeches will silence the anger against this continued betrayal of the indigenous people of the State. Said Mr. R. K. Synrem, Chairman Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO).
