Shillong, March 29: The My Bharat Meghalaya initiative successfully held the Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament Festival at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Annexe Hall, Rilbong, on Saturday, bringing together young leaders and change-makers from across the state.

Centered on the theme “Union Budget 2026: Strengthening the Indian Youth’s Path towards Viksit Bharat 2047,” the festival witnessed vibrant discussions, with participants demonstrating strong oratory skills and presenting thoughtful perspectives on issues affecting their communities.

The top five contestants selected were Riwaka Tangsong and Rabeclyne Kharbyngar (East Khasi Hills), Sengrimchi Marak (East Garo Hills), Pynhiammiki Ryngksai (East Khasi Hills), and Riakor Lyngdoh Nonglait (Eastern West Khasi Hills). These winners will represent Meghalaya at the National Level Youth Parliament in New Delhi next month.

The event aimed to foster dialogue, leadership, and civic engagement among youth, offering a platform for them to voice their ideas and contribute to nation-building.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Chief Guest and Ampati MLA, Smt. Miani D. Shira, emphasized the importance of such platforms in nurturing young leaders. She encouraged participants to remain authentic and speak from the heart.

“At the end of the day, whatever comes from within will speak louder than anything that you’ve prepared or are made to say,” she stated.

She further highlighted that such exercises help young people understand the perspectives of legislators and the rationale behind policymaking.

“It is a very important exercise to understand the different perspectives and the nature of the work that we do,” she added.

Guest The Mawphlang MLA, Shri Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah, encouraged the youth to make the most of the opportunity, noting that such platforms build confidence and lasting skills.

“All of you may not be politicians, but you will be speaking in many forums. The experience gained here will stay with you forever,” he said.

Smt. Linda B.K. Sangma, Director, My Bharat Meghalaya, noted that the Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament Festival 2026, an initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, reflects a collective commitment to empowering youth as active stakeholders in nation-building.

Other dignitaries present included Shri Malthus S. Sangma, Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly; Dr. Andrew Simons, Adviser (Legislation) Meghalaya Legislative Assembly; Shri Bobby Wahlang, State Youth Officer, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya; and F.
