Shillong, May 15: With an aim towards TB free village, The District Tuberculosis Office, East Khasi Hills District conducted an awareness programme on tuberculosis in collaboration with St. Edmund’s College, Department of Social Work (UG)today at Mawthawtieng village, Khatarshnong, reaching out to school children, teachers and community members.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri. Dajied S. Dkhar, Senior Tuberculosis Laboratory Supervisor, explained about the disease tuberculosis, how it spreads, its sign and symptoms, prevention and treatment.
The resource persons cited that Mawthangtieng set as an example to other area under Khatarshong, which does not have any tuberculosis case as of now. Shri Fillan Khongsit, Senior Treatment Supervisorencouraging the community membersto prevent oneself from tuberculosis as it will help the community to remain as a tuberculosis free village.
After the health talk, the Interns of District TB Office and Unnat Bharat Abhiyanperformed an action song and Phawaron tuberculosis as an infotainment also with an aim to make the people understand more about TB and asa social message to deliver about the epidemic disease of Tuberculosis and efforts to eliminate it.
During the programme, the prizes were also distributed to the winners of the drawing competition. Moreover, the highlight about the programme in such remote area was that it was able to sensitize the community people about TB not only through health talk but also by using various IEC materials such as posters, banners etc. and infotainment media such as phawar and action song, which is relatable with the community members through traditional medium of health communication.
In the programme, it was seen with an active participation from the community members including Headman Shri Lamphrang Nongrum, executive members,students of Mawthawtieng U.P School,Mawthawtieng L.P School,and the teachers of the respective schools.
