Shillong, May 22: Saving the environment has become a necesscity rather than an responsibility for the present generation. the rich bio-diversity of the world needs preserving it for generations to come is the need of the hour.
With an aim to spread awareness on the need to preserve biodiversity in the state the Meghalaya State Biodiversity Board and The Department of Forest and Environment Govt of Megalaya Cleleberatd the International day for Biological Diversity at U Soso Tham Audotorium on Wednesday in the city.
Speaking at the occasion as the chief guest Minister of forest and environment Mr. Prestone Tynsong said thet the biodiversity plays a very important role in the changing world of today, he also added that more area in the state should be bought under protection.
He also stressed on the measure being taken by the depertment in demarcating more area under botanical gardens, ecological parks, biospers reserves etc.
Besides, Tynsong also highlighted about the conservation measures already initiated in the state like Parks, botanical gardens, seed banks, national banks and biosphere reserve.
He then appeals the young generation to leave no stone unturned to conserve and protect the biodiversity as all human beings, plants and naimals are interdependent in nature and needs each other in order to servive on this earth.
It may also be mentioned here that the period 2005-2015 is the International Decade for Water for Life. Water is essential for life. No living being on planet Earth can survive without it. It is a prerequisite for human health and well-being as well as for the preservation of the environment.
To mark the occasion various competitions were being organised which include essay and painting competitions were being organised. Besides, awards were also given away to students from different School who participated in the painting, drawing and essay competition.(SP News)
