Cop injured in attempt to foil abduction

Tura, July 26: Meghalaya police commando Abhijit Mazumdar sustained a bullet injury today while making an attempt to foil a kidnapping attempt at 7th mile in the outskirt of Tura in West Garo Hills.

Mazumdar and his friend Rana Chakroborthy, a teacher, were on a motor bike when the unidentified gunmen stopped them. The incident took place between 10:00 – 10:30 am.

“Five unidentified gunmen stopped them. They were making an attempt to kidnap Rana, to which Abhijit intervened. In the process, Abhijit was shot at. He has sustained bullet injuries and is undergoing treatment at Tura civil hospital. They managed to abduct the teacher”, said Mukesh Singh, superintendent of police, West Garo Hills.

“Mazumdar sustained injuries on his back and managed to run toward the jungle”, Singh added.

Later the teacher’s body, who was pursing his PhD at North Eastern Hill University, Tura campus was found.

Mazumdar, a commando of the 5th Meghalaya Battalion was on leave and travelling with his friend to his native village in Barengapara, near Dalu, along India-Bangladesh border. He joined the police force in 2008.

Inspector general of police (operations), G H P Raju said, “He (Mazumdar) tried to rescue the teacher like a true cop. In that process they shot at him. He is a hero. Operation is on to rescue the abducted teacher”. (SP News)
