Shillong, Jan 11: The chief of the banned terrorist outfit of the Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) Champion Sangma will contest the forthcoming assembly polls under any circumstances stated Champions lawyer Sujit Dey.
Informing media persons Sujit dey said the Shillong Bench of Guwahati High court’s has decided to grant bail to the chief of the banned terrorist outfit in two out of the three cases levelled against him.
Further, highlighting on the court’s hearing , the lawyer of the GNLA chief, Sujit Dey, said, “Champion has been granted bail today in the two Nongstion cases.”
“ Now, the only case left is the Pynursula case,” he added.
Alleging lacunas in the filing of the Pynursula chargesheet, optimitic Dey, said, “ Now he needs a bail from the pynursula case which will not take long.”
Putting across Champion’s view communicated to him on the ensuing assembly polls, Dey said, “ Champion is very keen to contest the elections.”
Expressing optimisim in getting bail out of the Pynnursula case, Dey however said, “He will contest the elections either from inside or outside.”
It may be mentioned here that Champion, a former DeputySuperintendent of Police who co-founded the GNLA in 2010, was arrested on July30, hours after he was pushed back from Bangladesh. He was in jail in Bangladesh and had completed his prison term there before being sent back. He was wanted by police for masterminding several crimes, including killings and extortion ininsurgency-ravaged Garo Hills in western Meghalaya. Champion was currently facing charges under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. GNLA most often termed as a rogue organisation by police is yet to have any dialogue with the government.
