Lakhs of Hindu devotees today thronged the famous pilgrimage site at Babedpara

Tura, April 22:  At least 10 lakhs devotees today thronged the famous pilgrimage site at Babedpara in West Garo Hills, about 50 km from here to observe the annual Charantala Kali Puja.

This year marks the golden jubilee celebration. The puja was first observed here in April 1965. Prior to the establishment of the temple, many people in the village had lost their lives due to an unknown epidemic. On a particular day, about seventeen of them lost their lives.

The organisers say that the temple was built after a villager saw a vision of the Goddess asking for a temple and prayers chanted. “Sine than, we have kept this tradition alive. Every year there are devotees from all over the country and neigbouring Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar”, said Bholanath Koch, president of the Charantala Kali Puja Welfare Society.

Many devotees from the neigbouring villages, including Tura take a walk to be at this pilgrimage site. They say that it is their dedication to Goddess Kali.

“I come on foot every year to seek blessing from Maa Kali”, said Santosh Saha of Tura. “For the last seven years, we as a group have been visiting Maa Kali on foot from Tura”, said Gobind Burman from Tura adding, “It is a tradition for us now”.
A devotee from Bangladesh, Sobita Das, who has come along with her husband Kartika Das and their two children – one eight years old and the other three said, “This is my third visit to this place. I came with my parents before marriage. After marriage, I came with my husband and after a gap of nine years, I am here with my family to seek blessing from Maa Kali”.

The annual puja and the mela has attracted pilgrimage and every year there is a foot fall of about 10 – 15 lakhs devotes, but lack of government support is a telling blow. “We need good infrastructure to cater to our pilgrims. We don’t have facilities for their accommodation, basic sanitary toilets, water etc.

It is difficult exercise to hold this annual puja, but with Maa’s blessing, we have continued our tradition”, said Winson Koch, General Secretary of the Puja committee.(SP News)
