Meghalaya Police launched “Opertion Hill Storm” against militant in Garo Hills

Shillong, Aug 20: The Meghalaya Police along with CoBRA and other Central Forces have launched “Operation Hill Storm” in Durama hills area of Garo Hills on 11 july 2014 to flush out GNLA, ULFA and other militant outfits from their stronghold. It is a well known fact that since ANVC days, the interior jungle areas of Durama in Garo Hills has been remained a safe heaven for all militant groups for many reasons such as difficult terrain, thick jungle, scant police presence and  plenty of water sources. The Durama hills area has become the main training ground for many militant groups including GNLA, ULFA and other militant groups.

Meghalaya Police has launched “Opertion Hill Storm” on 11 july 2014 to flush out the militants and also occupy the interior areas on continual basis to deny ‘comfort zone’ to GNLA and ULFA militants in this area.

During “operation Hill Storm”, four GNLA camps were busted by the Security Forces. They are Sohan D Shira Camp on 11-7-2014, Rupanto R Marak Camp, Baichung Camp and General Camp. In total 25 militants belong to GNLA, ULFA, ASAK, and other militant groups were arrested from various hideouts. Eight weapons, 220 rounds of ammunition, five Rocket Launcher Shells and other explosive materials were recovered during ‘Operation Hill Storm’.

The General Camp is the main camp where huge quantities of ration is stacked for the rainy season. This Camp is the main training camp for the newly inducted cadre. All the training activities were conducted by ULFA trainers. Many ULFA cadres were also trained in this General Camp.

Many important GNLA cadres such as Savio, Baichung, Sacheng and Jarek have managed to run away from the General Camp along with recruited Cadres.

The Operation Hill storm is an on going operation which will continue for the next two months.(SP News)
