TURA, December 13: The 12 December 2012 will be remembered as a red-letter-day in the annals of Meghalaya in general and Garo hills in particular as the foundation stone for Meghalaya’s first Government Medical College was today laid in Garo Hills by Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh. The foundation stone was laid on land under the Balalgre and Jewilgre Nokmaship near Damalgre around 25 kilometers from Tura.
Addressing the gathering Dr Sangma stated that history had been created today for the people of Meghalaya as the state would now be able to produce its own doctors and said that another Medical College under PPP mode would be established very soon. The present Government Medical College is scheduled to be completed in three years time Dr Sangma informed and said that the government was awaiting the final DPR.
Stating that the idea of having the state’s own Government Medical College was not only to produce doctors but to create a brand name Dr Sangma emphasized on the need for the creation and utilization of human capital on a sustainable basis. The Medical College will bring about a tremendous Socio Economic transformation in the region informed Dr Sangma and said that the medical college should not only be able to provide MBBS and PG courses but should be a center of excellence pursuing research and development other than academic excellence.
Dr Sangma at length spoke on the government’s various interventions and schemes aimed at elevating the academic and socio economic status of the people of the state and urged the people to partner with the government to bring about development.
Among others who spoke at the occasion were Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh, Health Services (MCH) Director, Dr M K Marak, Rangsakona, MLA Adolf Lu Hitler R Marak, State Planning Board Chairman Zenith Sangma, GHADC CEM P K Sangma and Southwest Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh.(SP News)
