Tura, July 30: The students of Tura Government College today raised
their pitch against the government demanding development of various
infrastructures, including introduction of new courses and appointment
of principal.
At least 10,000 students took to street venting its anger. The
protest rally began from the college campus and passed through the
main through fare of the town, including deputy commissioner office
and culminated at the college.
“These are genuine needs of our college. The Government College needs
a full-fledged Principal and Vice Principal. Without them the College
is suffering. We have been pressing for our demands to be heard, but
it is still falling on deaf ears”, said Balkarin Ch Marak, the general
secretary of the students’ union.
“We have a dearth of teachers and these posts are not being created.
Our College needs more options in education, including Honours
courses, BBA, etc, which will provide a bigger platform for students
to take up education in Tura itself, rather than go out of the state
or to Shillong. We also want the college to be upgraded to the post
graduate level”, said Balrang Momin, the president of the students
union.
Among other demands, the student have sought for better sporting
facilities, regular payment for teachers in the morning shift of the
college, speedy construction of residential quarters for students and
teacher, etc.
“The library needs more books and is too small to accommodate
students. It desperately needs to be extended. The science laboratory
also needs looking into. We also require a permanent water tank within
the college to cater to the needs of thousands. Despite being the
oldest college in Meghalaya, the college is still lagging behind in
development”, Momin added.
The students union has submitted a memorandum to chief minister, Mukul
Sangma and education minister, R C Laloo, who are yet to respond.(SP News)
