Training on DVAct and Crime against Women held at Tura

Tura,Nov,26: Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute in association with District Social Welfare Office, West Garo Hills, Tura, organized a two days’ training on Domestic Violence and Crime against Women for MCS/MPS officers, government officials, NGOs and women’s groups of West Garo Hills at Tura Circuit House Conference Hall here today.

Giving the Introductory Speech, Project Director, West Garo Tura, D D Sangma said that women were unaware of their rights though it has been enshrined in the constitution of India because of illiteracy and ignorance. Appraising the house on the latest provisions and acts to safeguard women he informed that Domestic Violence Act is directed for housewives. He added that in spite of being the common crime domestic violence crimes are least reported because women are afraid to report them. He also said that by culture Meghalaya is a matriarchal society thereby exalting the status of women, however women still continue to suffer he stated.      

He urged the women’s organizations to take up such cases with utmost sincerity and also stated that unless the attitude of men towards women change even the most powerful legislation will serve little purpose.

Important topics relating to crime against women and various provisions of government with regard to women, justice delivery and status of women in matriarchal society would be deliberated by scholars, advocates, social workers and government officials during the two day workshop.(SP News)
