Shillong, Feb 28: The Archdiocese of Shillong strongly condemn the incident that has taken place at the construction site at St. Xavier’s Girls Hostel in Umoid, South West Khasi Hills resulting in the lost of a precious life and causing injury to many labourers who were attacked by unidentified miscreants at the dead of night on the 24th February, 2021.
The Archdiocese request the authorities concerned to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to bring to justice the culprits who have committed the heinous crime and to thwart any attempt to bring about disharmony and peace in the area.
St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School was established in 2019 and it was the first school which has adopted the JAINSEM as a uniform for the Girl students of the school and the students at St. Xavier’s are mostly from the poor agricultural families.
The college section of the St. Xavier’s is scheduled to start in June, 2021. Necessary permission and NOC has been obtained from the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education and the process in going for seeking affiliation of the college to the North Eastern Hills University.
Due to the pandemic the construction work at the Institute has been behind schedule and in order to keep to the deadline for opening of regular classes for the College section, the construction work needs to be expedited. Hence the need to bring in additional skilled labourers was felt necessary.
With all good intentions the management of the institute has sought the permission and cooperation from all and sundry. It is therefore, unfortunate that some unidentified miscreants have resorted to violence causing injury to 7 persons and to the death of one person.
And call upon all right thinking persons in the society to condemn the incident. Said Mr Barnabas Nongbah general secretary inthe press state emtn.
The MLA of 19-Shillong South Mr. Sanbor Shullai has written to the Governor condemning the incident ad Umoid in South West Khasi Hills District, this incident has portray poor image of the state, this is a cowardice act by group of individuals even taking the lives of innocent people.
The cuprit should be booked immediately and justice be delivered to the victims. Such acts and people should not be tolerated by our or any other civil society.
This act projects the people and the state in very poor light and tarnishes its image as a tourist friendly state. The people who carried out this dastardly act should be apprehended and law should take its appropriate course of action.
Mr Shullai request the state Government to help the victims and also provide compensation to the family of the deceased. Thus I request all stakeholders through your medium to appeal for peace and communal harmony and not portray the image of the state in wrong light.
