Construction of new assembly building,Meghalaya  Speaker asked  LS Speaker for assistance 

Shillong, Nov 26: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh today requested financial assistance from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for the construction of the new assembly building in Mawdiangdiang.

The total cost of the project is 141 crores and the tender value is 127.76 crores. It may be informed that the 125-year-old structure that housed the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly was burned down in a devastating fire in 2001 and since then the state did not have a permanent Assembly building.

The Assembly Speaker also said that the intention of the Assembly Secretariat is to hold the budget session of 2022 in the new Assembly building being the 50th year of the State attaining it’s Statehood but that depends if everything goes as per the plan, however they are working in that direction.

The Assembly Speaker is currently in Kevadiya, Gujarat attending the two-day Presiding Officers’ Conference which commenced today.

At the conference, he spoke about the harmonious coordination between Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. During his speech, he also briefly covered on the Covid situation in the State.

The two-day Presiding Officers’ Conference also known as Speakers’ conference was held on the theme “Harmonious coordination between Legislature, Executive and Judiciary — Key to a vibrant democracy.”

The conference was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind.Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and speakers from other state legislative assemblies including Meghalaya Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira were in attendance.
