Meghalaya Civil Defence Conducts Mock Drill in the state as part of the Disaster Reduction

Shillong, October 18: The Civil Defence units in Meghalaya today conducted mock drills in different parts of the State as part of the observance of the International Day for Disaster Reduction which is observed globally.

In Shillong, a mock drill on Flood Rescue was demonstrated at Mawdiangdiang for the schools in the neighbouring area. The demonstration was organised by the Central Training Institute of Civil Defence and Home Guards, Mawdiangdiang in collaboration with the Civil Defence Office, Shillong and saw the participation of school students, teachers and local resident. Personnel from the Institute and SDRF demonstrated to the gathering the various methods of rescue that can be adopted in the event of a flood.

In Tura, a mock drill on earthquake was conducted by the Civil Defence Office, Tura at Greenvale Secondary School, Agillanggre. The simulation on earthquake was well received by students and teachers of the school who were trained on the do’s and dont’s in the event of an earthquake. Various rescue method was also taught to the students and teachers of the school by the Civil Defence personnel.

In Jowai, a similar mock drill simulating an earthquake was organised at Ladthalaboh Presbyterian School, Ladthalaboh by the Civil Defence Office of Jowai. Personnel of the Civil Defence Office conducted the mock drill with the participation of the students and teachers of the school, while also creating awareness for residents in the neighbouring areas about the do’s and dont’s in the event of an earthquake and various rescue methods for the calamity.

Started by the United Nations General Assembly, the International Day for Disaster Reduction has been observed since 1989 to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.
