The CPI told the Deputy Commisioner that potato in Shillong is 30 rupees per kg

Shillong, August  17: Concern over price rise of all essential commodities in the state the Meghalaya State Council of Communist Party of India (CPI) today sought the intervention of Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills District, requesting him to take appropriate steps to address the issue.

The CPI has also requested the DC to take up the matter with the state government regarding the non-payment of wages towards casual workers on time.

In the memorandum submitted to the DC, Samudra Gupta, secretary of CPI said, “The casual workers are suffering because of this and we also demand enhancement of minimum wages for them.”

Observing the impact of price rise on the common man, he said, “All the essential commodities like pulses, oil and other items have skyrocketed and have reached beyond reach of the common man whose income is limited.”

Informing that even the prices of potatoes which is a staple diet in Meghalaya is Rs. 30 per kg, he alleged that a section of unscrupulous traders are taking advantage of the situation.

“We request you (Deputy Commissioner) to take up the matter with appropriate authority by setting up agency to monitor the market at various place and fixing a uniform price of consumer goods,” he said.

He suggested that the government can also arrange necessary supply/ organize selling of selected items in various localities through mobile counter as done in many states.
