Shillong, November 19: Dr. D.D.Lapang.MLA, President Meghalaya PCC formally launched the State Level Year-long Birth Centenary Celebrations of (L) Indira Gandhi, at Congress Bhawan,Shillong on 19th November,2016. Dr.Lapang led the party in lighting the ceremonial lamp and offering of floral tributes before the portrait of Indira Gandhi.
Dr Lapang, who formally “declared the Year-long celebrations open”, in his stirring Inaugural address touched upon life of (L) Indira Gandhi from her childhood, when she had plunged in to the freedom movement. Dr.Lapang recalled how (L) Indira Gandhi returned to power in 1980 with a thumping majority, facing all odds, as she felt that “people were supreme and they had made her supreme”. Dr.Lapang remembered, with deep respect, how Indira Gandhi, sacrificed her life to protect the nation from the enemies, on the face of Khalistan issue, as she was confident that “every drop of her blood” would strengthen the nation.
The programme was chaired by Mr James S.Lyngdoh, Working President, MPCC who spoke on the elaborate arrangements made by the AICC at the National level and by the MPCC at the State Level to observe the year in a befitting manner.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Mr A.L.Hek, MLA, Vice President,MPCC, Dr.Manash Das Gupta, General Secretary, MPCC, Mr Richard Marak ,President, Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress, Smt Joplin Scott Shylla, President, Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress, who touched upon the life and contributions of (L) Indira Gandhi and the need to highlight her sacrifice to the nation in a very special way to counter the misinformation campaign unleased by the vested interests.
