World Red Cross Day on the theme “Be Humankind” was held at Raj Bhavan, Shillong

Shillong, May 13: The deferred observance of World Red Cross Day on the theme “Be Humankind” was today held at Raj Bhavan, Shillong wherein Meghalaya GovernorShri. Satya Pal Malik who is also the President of the Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that the Red Cross is one of the oldest humanitarian organizations in the world whose dedicated service has benefited millions. While appreciating the services rendered by the Red Cross Society, the Governor stressed on the need to imbibe the spirit of serving fellow human beings and to assist the Red Cross in its services.

He, therefore, called upon the people to rededicate their pledge in extending their cooperation and support to the Red Cross in their quest to serve mankind.

Lauding the role played by the Meghalaya Red Cross Society during the Covid 19- pandemic, he urged the people of the State to come forward and take advantage of the training programmes of the organization so as to prepare themselves for tackling any hazard and natural disaster.

Earlier, the Governor released the Red Cross Flag and also distributed certificates to new Life Members of the Red Cross Society of the State. World Red Cross Day, alternatively known as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, is annually observed on May 8, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swiss businessman Henri Dunant, whose efforts led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, adoption of Geneva conventions and creation of the iconic Red Cross.
