57 villages were affected by flood in West Garo hills

 

Tura, Aug 19: The incessant rain in the last three days has led to flood in two development blocks of Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills. At least 57 villages were affected due to flood in Selsella and
Tikrikilla development blocks. Brahmaputra and Jinjiram river flows through plain belt areas of Garo hills.

As per government report, 1580 households were affected, which include 1160 household completely damaged and 420 household partially damaged. A total of 1,550 hectare of land under sali paddy crop was destroyed.

The agriculture department has estimated the loss of Rs. 917.6 lakhs. The flood has affected Majhipara – Solairtek embankment. The district administration has undertaken a relief measure by putting empty cement bag filled with sand at eroded locations. They have also undertaken bamboo walling measures.

An official of the district administration said, “Embankment is eroding under strong water current and swirling action, damages are still occurring”.(SP News)
