Shillong April 15: The police said that on receiving information that a group of armed persons were leaving the city for Mawsynram to commit dacoity, a Naka was placed at Mawngap manned by SWAT and police of Mawngap Out Post. At around 3.45 Pm a local taxi bearing registration No. ML05-E-2767 (Maruti car) was intercepted and five persons were found inside. During search of the vehicle, two revolvers and e1even live ammunitions were found.
The gang was led by Shri Newman Kbarbani know as Pynshai Rani and Bahrit a hard core criminal. Other members of the gang includes ,. Raju Sin,Bharat Roy,Ski Sanjay Krishna Gowala , Munu Singh.
Background of Shri Newman Kharbani know Pynshai Rani also call Bahrit of Nongthymmai, Newman Kharbani or Pynshai Rani was first arrested on 28/6/2004 for committing robbery and iacoity. He was detained under MPDA from 21/7/2004 and released on 21\71 2005. In 2007, he resumed his Criminal activities and was arrested again on 31/3/2007 with arms.
He was admitted in Civil hospital but scaped from custody on 31/5/2007 Police managed to re-arrest him again on 24/6/2007. Again on 5/7/2007 he was detained under MPDA for a period of three years till 15/712010. After released from MPDA he was arested again for dacoity from oil tankers. He came out on bail and was arrested again on November, 2013 For dacoity at Sohiong.
The District Police had been putting Newman Kharbani Pynshai Rani under surveillance after his release on bail All five have been remanded to ten days Police custody said the Superintendent of police, East Khasi Hills, Shillong.(SP News)
