Shillong June 04: The most controversial road that funded by the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) in the West Khasi Hills District where uranium deposit is found will be completed by December 2014, this target was fix by the executing agency the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
The length of this road from Wahkaji to Mawthabah is 20 km, and it will cost Rs 40.19 cores with the revised estimate that was sign in the memorandum of Understanding between the KHADC and the UCIL. The original estimate of the road is Rs.19.88 cores in 2006.
The revised estimate was done in 2010 and it was agreed between the UCIL and the KHADC that the work will have to complete win and additional amount of Rs.20.31 Cores. The total cost of the road stand at Rs.40.19 Cores.
The former Chief Executive Member of the KHADC Mr HS Shylla has taken all the risk in executing the project in spite of all the protest from the Non- Governmental Organization like the Khasi Student Union who took the lead in protesting this road Construction.
With all the hurdles that the KHADC faces they could construct the road in that remote of the west khasi Hills. When every thing went to the right track the UCIL become the stumbling block in releasing the bill to the contractors.
In the MoU sing between the KHADC and the UCIL they have come to an understudying that from the date that the KHADC submit the Bill the UCIL has to release the money with thirty days, for which the UCIL did no oblige to their agreement.
The latest bill sent from the KHADC to the UCIL is on the month of March which amount to Rs. 3.5 cores which the UCIL is yet to released the found to the joint account.(SP News)
