Tura,Nov 12:Irked by the unsatisfactory quality of construction of roads in some sectors of Garo Hills Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma announced a slew of stringent measures to fix accountability and streamline road construction and other civil works . While he made it amply clear that very strict measures and penal action is contemplated for the contractors who fail to ensure quality of work and timely execution of civil works , he also focused and stressed on the need for training and capacity building of local labourers both skilled and unskilled and masons and supervisors for better implementation and more effective monitoring of civil works .
The Chief Minister undertook an urgent review of the status of roads of Tura and Ampati and the poor quality of construction of stretch of AMPT Road between 103rd and 133rd km in the stretch from Tura to Garobadha in Garobadha IB today long with senior officials of the PWD (Roads) Department in the presence of the Deputy Commissioners of West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills . He expressed his dismay and dissatisfaction that the works for the AMPT Rod allotted just a year back were in a state of disrepair needing urgent repair in the very next year barely few months after completion after the rainy season .
The Chief Minister expressed his ire at the contractors for the unsatisfactory nature of work undertaken by the concerned contractors and directed the engineers from the PWD (Roads) to issue a show cause to the erring contractors on why strict action should not be taken against them for compromising quality of work including initiation of legal proceedings and cancellation of their contracts and black listing them.
He felt these stringent measures will reflect the resolve of the state government to tackle delays in implementation of road projects and adherence to quality standards. Dr Mukul Sangma also directed the Additional Chief Engineer , Western Zone , Tura to initiate a meeting with contractors to apprise them of the new strategy and resolve of the department to improve the quality of work and take stringent action against the contractors who are not meeting the requisite standards .
At the same time he directed the PWD (Roads) Department to organize training programmes for local labourers , contractors and supervisors at all levels for which comprehensive module needs to be prepared . The Chief Minister also vented his displeasure for the slow pace of works on the road leading to the Circuit House , Tura and directed that it be completed in two weeks time . He also directed that the Additional Chief Engineer , Western Zone , Tura and other officers should supervise all the on going road projects and submit the report to him . He also requested the Deputy Commissioners to play a more pro-active role in ensuring the monitoring of the road projects. (SP News)
