An International Conference of the CulturalUNESCO began at Shillong

 

Shillong, Nov 27: An International Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)  began  at Shillong wherein delegates from several state and also abroad participated in the event.

The conference is themed as “cultural Heritage and peace education.”

There are a lot of issues that would be highlighted in the three-day conference, especially those related to cultural heritage and this gave a good opportunity for the northeast to showcase to the world about these aspects.

During the seminar, the Meghalaya Government has pointed out that many of the UNESCO schemes for Education and Science and Technology needs to be implemented in Meghalaya and the North East region.

During the inaugural session at Shillong, Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul sangma has urged the UNESCO to seen North East region as focus region for implementing its various schemes.

The visibly emotional Mukul also spoke about the unrest in the state.

He also stated that there is an attempt to create division in the society and even political leaders should be careful in their speeches as this infuse a sense of  insecurity in the society and literally divide the society.

He said such seminars should be held for politicians and often people are taken for a ride and in this process vested interest to plan communal hatred.

He recalled that Shillong  was perceived a beautiful place the colonial rule and  it has a history  which made Shillong a cosmopolitan place and the forefathers  had traditional value besides love and compassion for people of other community.

Recalling the past history, Mukul said that  during the state movement, APHLC had a wing that was led by  non tribal leader and this was another indication that the forefathers had traditional values of love and compassion.

Earlier in his speech,  Secretary General of Confederation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations of India Dhirendra Bhatnagar  spoke about the roles and objectives of the UNESCO. (SP News)
