Shillong, March 16: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, has launched and operationalised the CHAKSHU initiative, a citizen-centric facility under the Sanchar Saathi portal, to combat telecom-related fraud and strengthen consumer protection.
Since the implementation of the CHAKSHU facility in the state of Meghalaya, a significant number of citizens have actively participated by reporting suspected telecom fraud incidents. These reports have enabled timely analysis, identification of fraudulent patterns, and coordinated action with Telecom Service Providers and law enforcement agencies, thereby strengthening the security of the telecom ecosystem in the state.
The encouraging response to the CHAKSHU platform reflects growing public awareness and effective cooperation among telecom service providers, state police authorities, and the Department of Telecommunications.
CHAKSHU is designed as a user-friendly platform that enables citizens to report suspected fraudulent communications, spam messages, and harmful web links received through phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, social media, or internet browsing.
Through this initiative, citizens can report fraud attempts such as impersonation of government officials, banks or police authorities, fake investment schemes, KYC or payment-related scams, and phishing links or malicious applications.
The platform also allows users to report unsolicited commercial communications, including spam calls or messages received without consent. Citizens are encouraged to report such incidents preferably within seven days to enable timely and effective action. These reports assist the Department of Telecommunications and telecom service providers in identifying and preventing the misuse of telecom resources and strengthening cyber security mechanisms.
However, CHAKSHU is not meant for reporting cases involving financial loss or cybercrime. Such incidents should be reported through the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Through the CHAKSHU initiative, citizens can, Report suspected fraud communications, unsolicited commercial communications, and suspicious web links, Assist authorities in identifying misuse of telecom resources, Contribute to preventing financial fraud and cybercrime.
The CHAKSHU initiative plays an important role in protecting consumers from telecom fraud, discouraging the misuse of communication networks, and strengthening national digital security.
