CM Connect in action, one call, swift action, a single call brought a child home

Shillong, April 28: A distress call to 1971, the helpline under the Government of Meghalaya’s flagship CM Connect initiative, set in motion a rapid, coordinated rescue across states.

The caller reported that a minor from Meghalaya had been stranded in Kashmir and forced to work at a restaurant under exploitative conditions. He was allegedly overworked, denied wages, and subjected to abuse. Alarmingly, the child had begun expressing thoughts of self-harm.

Recognising the urgency, the CM Connect system established under the leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma immediately escalated the case through administrative channels and initiated coordination with authorities in Jammu & Kashmir. Officials worked through the night, maintaining continuous communication to ensure swift action.

Within hours, a joint team comprising the Assistant Labour Commissioner and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit in Jammu & Kashmir located the boy.

He was rescued from the establishment and moved to a government shelter home, where he is now safe. An FIR has been registered, a formal inquiry initiated, and the employer directed to clear all pending wages.

The incident highlights the effectiveness of CM Connect as a responsive citizen engagement platform. Since its launch in February 2024, the initiative has facilitated over 70,000 instances of citizen assistance and nearly 20,000 direct interactions, with satisfaction levels reported at around 95 percent.

The Government of Meghalaya, under the leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, has acknowledged the prompt coordination and support extended, which was critical in ensuring the safe rescue of the child.

For citizens, the message is clear: help is just a call away. No matter where you are, CM Connect ensures that your voice reaches the right authorities swiftly and effectively.

📞 Dial 1971 — because every citizen deserves to be heard, and every call matters.
