Shillong, June 25: A delegation of the Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur met the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Shri Thombor Shiwat, to urge the enactment of a law for the preservation of the matrilineal system of clan lineage among the indigenous peoples of the State.
The delegation comprised Shri R. L. Kharpran, President; Shri Raphael Warjri, General Secretary; Shri R. L. Blah, Spokesperson; Shri Manstudy Nongrem, Executive Member; and Shri J. L. Khongshei, Executive Member.
During the meeting, the delegation impressed upon the CEM the urgent need to facilitate legislation that would safeguard and strengthen the traditional matrilineal system of clan lineage, which forms the foundation of the social and cultural identity of the Khasi and Jaintia people.
They further emphasized the necessity of establishing a legal and constitutional mechanism for the recognition of the Dorbar Kur (clan organization) and for empowering the Rangbah Kur (clan elders) to perform their customary roles and responsibilities in preserving indigenous traditions, customs, and lineage practices.
The delegation expressed confidence that such legislation would reinforce the customary institutions of the indigenous communities and ensure the continuity of their unique matrilineal heritage for future generations.This version is suitable for a press release, news report, or official memorandum.
