Support Wings brings a day of learning and laughter to children in Shillong

Shillong, August 26: Sometimes, all it takes to light up a child’s day is a little time, a little laughter, and a lot of heart. Living by this spirit, Support Wings organised “Little Smiles,” an engagement initiative for the children at a local orphanage in Langkyrding, Shillong, bringing together 10 young volunteers for an afternoon of learning, creativity, and genuine connection.

The initiative was thoughtfully designed to go beyond just recreation. Volunteers led interactive sessions with the children on children’s rights and fundamental life skills, including self-awareness and values, helping the children engage with meaningful ideas in a fun and accessible way. These sessions were paired with recreational activities such as drawing and dancing, which brought plenty of energy, laughter, and creative expression to the day.

Through a mix of structured learning and playful activity, the volunteers were able to spend quality time with the children, encouraging them to open up, express themselves, and simply enjoy being kids for the afternoon. The event reflected Support Wings’ continued focus on holistic engagement, one that nurtures not just joy but also awareness and confidence among the children it works with.

More than just an NGO activity, Little Smiles in Shillong became an afternoon of learning, laughter, and genuine human connection, leaving both the children and the volunteers with memories to carry forward.

For many of the children, it was a rare chance to simply be heard, to talk about themselves, share their thoughts, and feel that someone was genuinely paying attention. The volunteers, in turn, came away with a deeper appreciation of the small but meaningful ways in which time and attention can make a difference.

This initiative is a part of Support Wings broader effort to reach children in underserved communities across the Northeast, an effort that continues to grow with each new city and each new group of volunteers who choose to give their time.

Speaking about the initiative, Krusha Seth, Senior Director of Support Wings, said, “At Support Wings, we believe that real impact comes from meeting children where they are, with warmth, patience, and genuine care. Little Smiles in Shillong was a wonderful example of that, our volunteers didn’t just bring a few hours of fun, they helped the children build a little more awareness and confidence in themselves. I’m proud of the thoughtfulness our team brought to this initiative.”
