Meghalaya CM distributes relocation grants to vendors at Brightwell

Shillong, Sept 14: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, today, distributed the on-time relocation grant of Rs 20,000 to relocated vendors at Barik and Dhanketi. Also present during the occasion were Minister, Arts & Culture etc and MLA, South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai and MLA, East Shillong, Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh besides officials from the Urban Affairs department.

Speaking during the distribution and interaction with the vendors, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, said that the relocation of the vendors is possible because of the cooperation of every stakeholder in the relocation process.

“Though it may look like a small and simple step, it is one of the most challenging situations that we have faced because it is not only about development but linked with the livelihood of the people and the overall beautification of the city,” he said.

He further informed that prime locations in the city have been given to vendors to ensure balance between the livelihoods of the vendors and the aesthetics of the city and its roads and streets.  He urged tourists and citizens alike to visit these vending zones informing that these vending zones and areas will be created into a lively environment with toilet facilities, sitting areas, decorative lighting, live performances in the evenings  so that all can enjoy these zones.

This one-time assistance of Rs 20,000 is a support to the vendors to help during the relocation and transition period. The vendors will receive immediate assistance of Rs 10,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer with assistance of Rs 2000 per month in the next five months.
