Ampati,Sept 20: A two-day workshop on “Documentation and Archiving of Koch Language” was held at Ghasura Gaon in South West Garo Hills on September 19 and 20, with the objective of preserving, documenting and revitalising the Koch language.
The workshop was funded by the Foundation for Endangered Languages (FEL), England and Wales, United Kingdom, and was organised by Prangshu Manjul, Project Director, in collaboration with Koch Krorang Mathop (KKM), Koch Literature Society, Meghalaya, under the leadership of Shri Nirmal Koch, President, Koch Krorang Mathop.
The workshop featured talks by experts in linguistics, language documentation and archiving. The resource persons included Dr. Palash Kumar Nath, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics, Gauhati University, whose research focused on the documentation of endangered languages; Dr. Monali Longmailai, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics, Assam University, Silchar, whose research areas included Tibeto-Burman languages, language documentation and archiving, morphosyntax, areal linguistics and language typology; and Dr. Krishna Boro, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics, Gauhati University, who specialised in language description and documentation.
Shri Upendra Hari Koch, Advisor, Koch Krorang Mathop (Koch Literature Society), also participated in the initiative aimed at the preservation and revitalisation of the Koch language.
Native Koch speakers from different age groups participated in the workshop, which provided a platform to discuss the importance of systematically documenting and archiving the Koch language.
The initiative sought to strengthen efforts towards the preservation and revitalisation of the Koch language. All participants received participation certificates at the conclusion of the workshop.
