Shillong, Feb 12: Umlyngka staked their claim in the SSA U-14 finals despite being a goal behind early on in Tuesday’s thriller at Ground III, Polo Grounds. Melvin Marbaniang’s 14th minute penalty put the Royals in the lead as they looked headed to an inspiring win. Royal Wahingdoh started off strongly but threw the match away after lapses in the defence, which was in turn smartly manipulated by the aggressive-looking Umlyngka attack.
After their 27th minute equaliser through Sanborlang, Umlyngka looked a rejuvenated side while sticking to the passing game. They then took a crucial lead seven minutes after half time with Iaipynskhem Tron playing the ball to perfection with a gentle left-footer (37”). But the Royals pushed hard before witnessing an injury-time leveller by the in-form Rheadulf Nongneng.
Proceeding into extra time (7½x2), both teams were tested for endurance. However, the match was headed towards an exciting finish and its outcome was finally decided after Gideon Lyngdoh headed a ball past the keeper in the last minute of extra time to help Umlyngka with a memorable finish. Umlyngka will now face the winning team of the second semifinal between Marbisu and Shillong Lajong on February 13th, Wednesday at the same venue.(SP News)
