Fencing & Floodlighting in the Indo-Bangladesh border

Shillong, May 29: The Deptt. of Border Management, Govt. of India, has taken several initiatives to create infrastructure in the border areas of the country. These include construction of fencing, floodlighting and roads along the Indo-Bangladesh borders, development of Integrated Check Posts. In addition, various developmental works have been undertaken by the Department under the Border Area Devp. Programme (BADP).

In order to prevent illegal immigration and other anti-national activities from across the border, the Govt. of India has sanctioned the construction of border roads and fencing in two phases. The total length of the Indo-Bangladesh border sanctioned to be fenced is 3.359.59 kms; out of this, 2,762.11 kms of fencing has been completed upto Dec. 31, 2012.

There have been some problems in construction of fencing in certain stretches on this border due to riverine and low lying areas, population residing within 150 yards of the border, pending land acquisition cases and protests by border population, which has led to delay in completion of the project.

Floodlighting in the states of W. Bengal, Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram and Tripura will be done at a stretch of 2,840 kms at an estimated cost of Rs.1,327 crore by the CPWD, EPIL and NPCC.

The work of floodlighting in new border areas for a length of 1,058 kms (W. Bengal -435.50 km, Mizoram – 04 kms, Meghalaya – 17.50 kms and Tripura – 601 kms) has been completed and work in 588.20 kms is in progress. (SP News)
