Shillong, July 26: The headman of Mawryngkang village along with two other members who were involved in forcing an alleged witchcraft practitioner to eat human excreta surrended before the police on Friday.These three soon after they surrendered were arrested by the Police.
According to the Superintendent of Police, M Kharkrang it was informed that the trio were involved in an inhumane act of forcing an alleged witchcraft practitioner in their village to eat human excreta on July 20 infront of the villagers.
The apprehended person has been identified as Kerini Khongsit, Rangbah Shnong, Thwer Tynsong, Assistant Rangbah Shnong and Jwatbor Khongmalai Secretary of the village, Kharkrang said.
Further he also informed that the three had evaded arrest when a police team had gone to the village to secure their arrest but early today they surrendered at his office.
“The trio have been booked under relevant sections of the law for violating human rights and cases against them were registered at Pynursla PS,” SP said.
It may be reminded here that Noping Khongsit and his family who resided at Mawryngkang village near Pynursla was alleged of practicing witchcraft by the member of the village near Pynursla, was penalised by members of his own village council on the grounds that he and his family were practising witchcraft.
It was also learnt that the Mawryngkang assistant village chief, Thwer Tynsong, admitted to have forcefully punished Khongsit. However, he defended by saying that it was a unanimous decision of the villagers to impose such inhumane punishment on Khongsit. (SP News)
