A preacher should preach with a Bible and a newspaper : Rev Gibbons

Jowai, Feb 10: The year long celebration of the U_Rev.H.H.Mohrmen_bad_u_Rev._John_Gibbons came to a close on February 9 at the Tympang playground Iawmusiang, Jowai. The chief guest at the closing ceremony was Lis Dyson Jones President of the General Assembly of the Unitarian and Free Christian Churches in Great Britain and other important dignitaries presence at the ceremony were local MP Vincent Pala, local MDC Moonlight Pariat, MLA Remington Pyngrope, Rev. Gary Smith, Rev. John Gibbons, Rev David Gyero and Rev. Brian Kiely leaders of Unitarian and Universalist Churches from the USA, Romania and Canada.

The celebration also culminated with the 113 annual conference of the Unitarian Union North East India and thousands of followers from the Khasi Jaintia and Karbi Anglong joined in the worships and conference. The conference started from February the 8 till the 10 of and apart from worship services, workshops were also held at the H.K. Singh School.

Preaching in the service Rev. John Gibbons of USA quoted Reinhold Niebuhr a Jewish Theologian who said that preachers should preach with a Bible in one hand and a daily newspaper in the other. Gibbons said that there is so much violence in the world and crime against women has increased, so it is not enough just to talk about religion preach. He urged on the faithful to come out of the four corners of the church world and address the issues which are prevalent in the society now.

John who is a avid reader of Shillong base newspaper online edition mentioned about the heroic efforts of Agnes Kharshiing who fight against crime against women, corruption ane etc in Meghalaya. Rev. Gibbons said that he salute the courage of aganes Kharshiing who has become like thorn for the government. He urged the congregation to be practical and practice what the church preaches.

The penultimate event of the 3 days long program was the torch procession in the evening of Sunday the 10 where hundreds and thousands of the faithful Unitarians took part in the march.(SP News)
