Shillong, Feb 28: First time in the history of the state that Meghalaya witnessed atleast four women candidates to the state legislative assembly the highest so far, incidentally all four were from the congress party.
The four candidates includes Deborah Marak, Dikancchi D Shira, Ampareen Lyngdoh and Roshan Warjri.
Marak a former deputy chief minister won from the Williamnagar, chief minister Mukul Sangma’s wife Dikancchi D Shira from Majenderaganj, Ampareen Lyngdoh from East Shillong and Roshan Warjri from North Shillong constituencies.
It may be mentioned here that altogether twenty-five women took part in the 2013 Meghalaya assembly election of which four were elected.
Deborah polled total votes of 6148 followed by Independent candidate Jonathane N Sangma 4166 and NPP Maruius N Marak who polled total votes of 3344 failing to retain the seat.
Ampareen Lyngdoh, the only woman legislator of the outgoing assembly, clinched the East Shillong seat beating veteran UDP leader and ceputy chief minister Bindo Mathew Lanong.
Speaking to reporters after being declared as an MLA Lyngdoh said that she will live up to the peoples expectation though difficult as it may be but she will try to give her best.
Coming to developmental works lyngdoh said that there is so much that need to be done especially in the malki area lots of thing need immediate attention.
Besides, she also said that she will dedicated herself to focus on development as well as to take the state forward in the field of education, entrepreneur adding that there is a need to work in making sure that young people feel that they are being notice by the government.
Sangma’s wife Dikanchi D Shira a new entrant to electoral politics too won the Mahendraganj seat polling a total of 11, 580 votes beating her nearest rival UDP sitting legislator Nimarson Momin who polled 4721 votes.
Warjri however won with a thumping majority against her opponents from the North Shillong seat.
Meanwhile, Warjri said that she is happy to be back in serving the people of the state.
Moreover she also mentioned that she will look into some major concern problems in her constituency and will constitute a committee to prioritize concern issues that will be dealt first.(SP News)
