Guwahati, Nov 25: On the occasion of Lachit Diwas, Assam reverberated with pride as the nation remembered the unparalleled bravery of Lachit Borphukan, the famed General of the Ahom Kingdom.
Just months after the Hon’ble Prime Minister unveiled a 125-foot-high statue of Lachit Borphukan in March 2024 and paid tributes to his indomitable spirit, the celebrations in Assam echoed his call to keep the legacy of this iconic leader alive.
Celebrating this heroic legacy, Cairn launched its campaign, “Preserving Culture: Promoting Self-Reliance,” aimed at encouraging a deeper connection between Assam’s youth and their rich cultural heritage.
The campaign, which intertwines art, literature, and culture, kickstarted with painting competitions organized in collaboration with Art Village, Nagaon, and Dreams School of Art, Guwahati.
Around 200 students from across the two centers brought Lachit Borphukan’s legacy to life with their vibrant interpretations on canvas. Their artworks, brimming with creativity and cultural pride, were a treat to eyes displaying their enthusiasm and a reflection of Assam’s deep-rooted heritage.
The competition became a platform for the youth to channel their artistic expressions while learning about the significance of Lachit Borphukan’s contributions to Assam.
“There is a need for the young children of Assam to have awareness about their roots. They are the future of Assam, and they need to understand that Assam has immense potential for growth and development.
The best scenario for any state is when culture and development go hand in hand, and the youth and the children are the true catalysts for this,” said Sujit Das, Manuscript Artist and Principal of Jyoti Art School, Nagaon.
Expressing gratitude for the initiative, Mitali Bhattacharjee, Founder-in-Charge of Dreams School of Art, Beltola and Silpukhuri branches, said, ‘We are deeply grateful to Cairn for encouraging creativity and supporting young talent through this art competition. Their encouragement serves as an inspiration for the artists.
The event was graced by eminent artists like Mayur Phukan, Nowgong kala Niketan, Nagaon, Smriti Hazarika, Jyoti Art School, Nagaon and history teacher Pradip Kumar Goswami Motiram Bora H.S. Balika Vidyapith who guided and encouraged the young participants with their expertise.
As Lachit Diwas rekindles the heroic spirit of Assam’s iconic leader, initiatives like these ensure that the essence of Lachit Borphukan’s legacy continues to thrive in the hearts and minds of the younger generation.
