Shillong, Nov 30: Meghalaya has achieved a significant milestone in its tourism development journey by securing ₹199 crore under the “Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale” scheme for 2024-25.
This sanction is part of the ₹3,295.76 crore allocated to 23 states across India under this challenge-based program, aimed at fostering world-class tourism infrastructure and promoting sustainable economic growth.
The sanctioned funds will support two transformative projects proposed by the Department of Tourism: the redevelopment of Umiam Lake and the establishment of an iconic tourist destination at Mawkhanu, each allocated INR 99.27 Crores.
Meghalaya stands among one of the top five beneficiaries with a sanction of INR 198.5 Crores, a remarkable achievement for the region.Particularly, Meghalaya surpassed all other Northeastern states and many larger states in the country, none of which received more than INR 100 Crores except for Assam.
Meghalaya’s Tourism Department,under stringent deadlinessubmitted comprehensive project proposals that aligns with sustainability principles and high-value tourism goals, toenhance local economy, generate employment, and celebrate cultural heritage.
Umiam Lake, a cultural and ecological treasure of Meghalaya with breathtaking landscapes, is poised to become a premiere tourist hub. The project includes a crafts village, arts and culture pavilion, botanical garden, amphitheater, and essential infrastructure like roads and utilities.
The redevelopment also complements the introduction of the Western Bypass Highway, aimed at decongesting Shillong and Sohra. Currently attracting 16,222 annual visitors, Umiam is projected to host 1,27,750 tourists annually post-development.
The project is expected to generate 1,168 direct jobs and 2,675 indirect jobs, fostering a thriving tourism-based economy and improving local livelihoods through public-private partnerships (PPP).
Additional attractions such as luxury resorts, glamping sites, and eco-friendly design techniques will enhance Umiam’s appeal for both leisure and business travellers, while ensuring sustainable development.
The Mawkhanu project envisions a vibrant, multifunctional space for cultural and community activities. Proposed developments include a Meghalayan Experience Theme Park, Festival Ground and Amphitheater, and supporting amenities. The site will also host marquee events such as the Cherry Blossom Festival, celebrating local arts, music, and cultural heritage.
Designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, Mawkhanu aims to redistribute tourist traffic from Shillong, increase footfall by 2.5 lakh visitors annually, and generate 1,016 direct jobs and 2,327 indirect jobs.
Future PPP projects such as an amusement park, convention center, luxury accomodation, and golf course will further enhance the destination’s vibrancy and economic sustainability.
The Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed his pride in the state’s achievement “This sanction reaffirms Meghalaya’s commitment to creating world-class, sustainable tourism destinations. These projects will not only boost our economy but also preserve our rich cultural and ecological heritage for generations to come.”
As one of the top recipients of funds under this scheme, Meghalaya continues to set benchmarks for tourism development in India, leading the way for the northeastern region with a strong emphasis on sustainability, community engagement, enriching livelihoods and global-scale branding.
