Maligaon, July 04: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) ushered in a new era of passenger rail transportation in Tripura and the Northeast with the inauguration of the region’s first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service.
The Chief Minister of Tripura, Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, flagged off the inaugural run of Train No. 75679/75680 (Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala) MEMU at Agartala Railway Station on 4th July, 2026.
The train, which had been operating earlier as a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) service, has now been successfully replaced and upgraded by a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU), marking a major technological advancement following the electrification of the route.
The historic event marks another significant milestone in NFR’s continued efforts towards modernization, sustainable transportation and enhanced passenger convenience following the rapid electrification of railway routes across the region.
The flagging-off ceremony was held in the august presence of dignitaries like Shri Sushanta Chowdhury, Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Transport and Tourism, Govt. of Tripura, Shri Rajib Bhattacharjee, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Smt. Mina Rani Sarkar, MLA alongwith the Divisional Railway Manager of Lumding Division of NFR and other senior railway officials.
The introduction of the first MEMU service in Tripura as well as the entire NE is a landmark achievement for NFR in its mission to provide faster, cleaner and more efficient rail connectivity. Unlike Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains, MEMU services operate on electric traction, making them environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and economical to operate.
MEMU trains offer superior acceleration and deceleration, enabling quicker movement between stations and reducing overall journey time on suburban and short distance routes. They also ensure smoother rides, less noise levels, reduced maintenance requirements and zero emissions at the point of operation, thereby contributing to Indian Railways’ commitment towards green and sustainable transportation system.
The new Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala MEMU service will significantly benefit daily commuters, students, office-goers, traders and tourists by providing a reliable, comfortable and more eco-friendly mode of transportation between Tripura and the adjoining areas of Assam.
Improved connectivity will facilitate easier movement of people, strengthen social and economic ties between the neighbouring states and promote regional development. The service will also support local commerce by enabling convenient travel for small business owners and workers while encouraging greater use of rail transport over road travel mode.
As the first MEMU train in Tripura and the Northeast, this pioneering initiative underscores NFR’s vision towards transforming rail infrastructure, enhancing passenger experience and supporting the overall development of the region through modern, sustainable and customer-centric railway services.
