Tura, July 30: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, today, distributed land documents to the settlers of GAD Land at Chinap A’slang in Tura town area in a program that was held Chinap A’slang Community Hall, Tura.
Prior to the handing over of the land documents beneficiaries speaking during the occasion shared their experiences of humiliation and helplessness they faced when they visited government offices for welfare schemes, caste certificates, banks for loans, electricity and water connection etc.
They expressed their deep gratitude to the Chief Minister and the government for the land settlement program stating that their dignity and social security will be restored.
Speaking during the occasion, Chief Minister, said that many families have settled at Chinap A’slang through years of uncertainty and insecurity, without any land document, stating that lacking land ownership documents causes legal insecurity, financial exclusion and vulnerability to eviction. “For the families that receiving the land documents this afternoon, that fear and insecurity end today,” he said.
He also informed that in Tura Town Area, the land settlement covers eight localities and 754 households. “Before we met at the Tura Auditorium on 12 December 2025, only 42 households across all eight localities had deposited the premium.
Today that figure is 210 households. Across the eight localities, 127 documents are now ready in the hands of the district administration for handover. In Chinap Asillang alone, out of 93 households, 25 households have completed their deposit and are receiving their land documents today,” he said.
The Chief Minister thanked Chinap Asillang Development Committee for working closely together with the government and the administration while taking aboard the people of the area and stated, ” The government will not impose land settlement on any locality. We will move forward only at your consent.”
Taking the opportunity, he also highlighted some of the development projects and initiatives for Tura town and specifically for Dakopgre area of which the Chinap A’silang loaclity is a part of. “Today Tura town is in the middle of the largest development works in the history of the town,” he said.
He informed that the redevelopment plan for Tura is close to Rs 1,928 Crs with works worth more than Rs 1,331 Crs already under execution on the ground. “The Najing Bazar redevelopment, sanctioned at Rs 60.76 crore, will give our vendors and small traders nearly 200 shops with parking and proper facilities instead of a crowded roadside,” he said and informed that at Dakopgre Rs 51.21 Crs is being invested into a multi-level parking complex with cinema halls, gaming zones and food courts.
“We are putting Rs 6.51 Crs into 552 LED smart streetlights on the dark stretches, the market roads and the routes our children walk to school, and close to 500 CCTV cameras that will be linked to a command-and-control centre,” he said.
Further, he said that The Integrated Administrative Complex at Rs 165 Crs will bring scattered offices under one roof and informed that The P. A. Sangma Sports Complex and its new West Stand, the Pa Togan Sangma Track and Field stadium and the Tura Technology Park are all under construction.
He also announced that Assembly Session in September 2027 will be held at the Convention Hall, the construction of which is presently ongoing. Further, he also said that that the Closing Ceremony for the National Games 2027 will be held in Tura thus bringing in decentralized administration and governance and equitable development across the state.
In conclusion, the Chief Minister said that the land document is not just a piece of paper but a validation of dignity, security and financial and legal clearance.
