Shillong, Sept 01: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today attended the prayer meeting at the Cathedral Church Cemetery, Tura, to mark the 79th Birth Anniversary of (L) Purno Agitok Sangma, former Lok Sabha Speaker and former Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
He was accompanied by MLAs Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma, Sanjay A. Sangma and Ian Botham K. Sangma.The prayer ceremony was led by Auxiliary Bishop of Tura, Most Rev. Jose Chirackal.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister paid rich tributes to (L) P.A. Sangma and said that he was not just a leader, but an institution.
“Late P.A. Sangma’s ideals, principles and vision continue to guide us. His life was defined by humility, secularism, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to serve the people, especially the poor and marginalized,” the Chief Minister said.
Recalling (L) Sangma’s vision for the youth, the Chief Minister said that he always believed that the youth are the future of the nation and the greatest strength of the Northeast.
“He had a strong vision for youth empowerment, through education, employment and leadership. He wanted our youth to be confident, competitive and rooted in our culture, and to lead not only Meghalaya but the nation. His dream was to see young people from the Northeast become leaders in every field,” he added.
The Chief Minister further said that (L) P.A. Sangma’s principles of unity in diversity, selfless service, tribal pride, and national integration will continue to inspire generations.
“He taught us to think big, to dream for our people, and to work with dedication. His ideals will continue to motivate us to strive for the welfare of our people,” he said. Later, the Chief Minister, along with the citizens of Tura, offered floral tributes at the statue of (L) Purno A. Sangma at the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex, Dakopgre, Tura.
