Shillong, Sept 15: Ri-Bhoi continue to lead the medals table after a terrific second day’s worth of action at the Meghalaya State Senior Athletics Championship 2026 today.
Ri-Bhoi have 8 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze, while East Khasi Hills have risen to second place with 4 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze. That dropped Eastern West Khasi Hills to third and they currently have 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze.
The three-day event is organised by the Meghalaya Athletics Association (MAA) with the support of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at the Sports Authority of India centre on the NEHU Shillong campus here.
East Khasi Hills won the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays as well as the men’s 5000m, which was taken by Daniel L Wahlang. The women’s 5000m gold medal was bagged by the superb Balasiewdor Pathaw, who was a minute and a half in front of her nearest rival.
Ri-Bhoi won two gold medals today through Anrisha Klein in the women’s long jump and Banistar Syiem in the men’s shot put.
Both 4x100m relays were won by teams from West Jaintia Hills, with East Khasi Hills second in both.
Garo Hills’ athletes also had much to celebrate, with Tushal M Sangma taking gold for North Garo Hills in the men’s javelin. Dilme Ch Marak of South Garo Hills won the women’s discus event and Nokme Ch Sangma (also SGH) won the women’s javelin. Eliam Bonkam G Sangma gave South West Garo Hills their first medal with gold in the men’s long jump.
Meanwhile, Tengsilchi B Marak won the women’s 400m race after Lastly Surong came first in the corresponding men’s event for East Jaintia Hills.
All districts have won at least one medal from the first two days of the championship. With several events remaining, there is ample scope for the participants to earn further glory for themselves and their districts and put their name for consideration with the 39th National Games just a few months away.
