There are 45 patients undergo free cataract surgery at Ampati civil hospital

Amapti, Oct 31: In a major push towards preventing avoidable blindness, 45 patients underwent free cataract surgery at Ampati Civil Hospital between October 28 and 31, following an eye-screening camp that benefited around 100 people.

Organised under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI), South West Garo Hills, the initiative began with a free cataract screening and eye check-up camp on October 26, held from 9 AM to 4 PM at the hospital.

Around 100 patients were screened by Dr Elivia N Sangma,  MS Ophthalmology  and Team for cataracts and other vision-related problems during the camp, while free spectacles were distributed to those requiring vision correction.

The screening drive aimed to facilitate early detection of eye ailments and ensure timely medical intervention, particularly for people at risk of vision impairment.

The subsequent four-day surgical programme enabled 45 patients to receive free cataract surgery, providing much needed access to essential eye care services.

The initiative underscores the Health Department’s continued commitment to reducing avoidable blindness and improving access to quality eye care through early screening, timely treatment and community outreach.
