Shillong, March 08: Testiphul Paliar who was arrested and separated from her children in Sept last, and in 45 days of detention was produced before the judge only once, is still not able to go back to her village Dumshohksoin, West Khasi Hills District, as the Secretary of the village has told her they stick to their decision to ostracize her.
She went to the Nongstoin Police on the 6th March 2014, to ask them to help file an FIR, they instead tell her to go to the Syiem (King). Till date she cannot go back to see her mother and also feels her mother wants to be with her. With the intervention of the CSWO and a letter to the Chairperson CWC, Meghalaya, last month the police reluctantly asked the family members of Testiphul to bring the Children to the Police Station at Nongstoin. Now she is with her children but cannot go back to her village with them.
Sistina Lamare, of Umraling , Ri Bhoi District, Meghalaya, was badly assaulted when her nephews beat her up and stamped all over her stomach a couple months back, and she suffers but has to flee her own home as the Head of the Village is in connivance with the attackers. An FIR was filed in this regard and to wreak vengeance on her the village headman and few others cause problems for her and even filed an FIR against her alleging she had stolen a pipe hardly 2 ft long belonging to the PHE.
The pipe was actually given to her by one Nengnong who works in the PHE Department, at Umsning, 12 years back. Having to leave her own home because of the fear of trouble from the headman and company she sold off the pipe to some scrap vendors and the FIR was lodged against her.
The women and children of Umsawli whose homes were demolished and destroyed by the MUDA, twice, now have to fight the legal battle against the perpetrators who in spite of an FIR the main perpetrator is still given a long hand by the Police. The documents which were provided to the Government have proven to be forged according to the FSL report, proving the whole transaction null and void, but no action whatsoever, to make arrests, by the Police.
More than 10 crores have been paid to the land owners who provided these forged documents. The Police are giving time to the perpetrator ( A former Addl Advocate General) to convince the evicted families to take another plot and to compromise with the perpetrators.
Women candidates, who appeared for the Asst LP Teachers job, as expected and required for by the Government, have been cheated of their jobs and their marks have been forged, in the house of the then Education Minister, according to the then Director of Education, but no action is taken and they still suffer injustice throughout.
Another woman who lost her child to an operation done by a Doctor in the Ganesh Das Hospital, last year, now instead faces a defamation suit by the Doctors Association of Meghalaya.
The so called Compensation scheme by the Government, for rape victims, is also not visible to many of the applicants who are in need of support. Till date many single parent families, in the rural areas, do not have ration cards and Government does not take any priority in this. The Women is left to fend for herself and her children, living hand to mouth. Her land is taken away by greedy people and no protection whatsoever is provided.
Many old aged women are cheated of the Old Age Pension Scheme, and many are not even aware. NREGS is implemented in some areas with a JCB depriving women full benefit of this scheme, and when women complains they are threatened with an FIR.
A total of more than 28 rape cases, 4 molestation cases, 3 attempt to murder, 3 attempt to rape of minors, 1 dowry, 5 murder cases( 1 not reported at Tura of a woman from Shillong, in spite of an FIR by the mother), 11 assault cases, reported so far this year.
Then there are litigations, pensions, maintenance cases, Domestic Violence cases, where the woman is made to run from pillar to post for justice. To top it all the many police Officers, get annoyed with the women who come to the CSWO for help.
There is also the horror of Rising prices which affects the woman most. This is the plight of the woman in the State and yet a Woman strives for Peace, and Justice. The CSWO wishes every woman of the State A very Happy Woman’s Day, and calls all women of the State, to not step back in fear, but to fight for their Rights and can always feel free to call in these numbers…9436164181, 9436118164. said the CSWO president Smti Agnes Kharshiing.(SP News)
