Police refute the allegation; GNLA Chairman did not use mobile phone in Jails

Shillong, June 07: Apropos to the news item dated 7th June, 2014, captioned “Champion uses mobile with net connection in jail” published in The Shillong Times, am to inform you that a thorough internal enquiry was conducted today by a senior officer to unearth the mobiles and SIM cards allegedly used by Shri Champion Sangma, MPDA detenue in the  Shillong jail.

During the enquiry, no unauthorized mobile phone(s) or SIM cards were found in the cell where Shri Champion Sangma is lodged or anywhere in the premises of the Shillong jail compound.

Regarding the mobile numbers 8794201658 (Vodafone) and 8413055138 (Airtel), on checking with the Vodafone and Airtel service providers to know the Subscriber details of these two SIM cards it was found that none of these SIM cards is in the name of Shri Champion Sangma. These SIM cards are in the name of two civilians whose names can’t be shared with the public without the permission of these Subscribers

Regarding the alleged facebook account operated by Shri Champion Sangma from Shillong jail, it is to clarify that the screen shot taken from the facebook postings published in your esteemed daily newspaper belongs to a facebook account holder in the name of  “Rangbil Sangma”.  The personal details of Rongbil Sangma, such as date of birth etc, posted on his facebook  do not tally with the personal details of Shri Champion Sangma including the  date of birth.

It is also to clarify that very strict access control mechanism is in place at the jail entrance. No unauthorized person or material, under any circumstances, is allowed into the restricted  security area of the jail compound. All the visitors are subjected to thorough frisking while allowing entry in to this area to meet the jail in-mates. With this access control mechanism in place, Shri Champion Sangma cannot have  access to either SIM cards or to any electronic gadgets or to any other unauthorized items in to his cell.(SP News)
