Shillong October 29: All the past and the present government are responsible or not taking any step to systematize the spelling in khasi language. Though the khasi language was inducted at the North Eastern Hills University, having with the khasi department but till date the spelling in the khasi language is yet to be systematized.
Mr SS Majaw the former president of the Khasi Author Association (KAS) and a retired professor of the Synod Collage in the khasi department in the interaction with the SP News Agency admit that “Yes” the spelling in the khasi language is yet to be systematize. At present all the authors in the khasi language write the spelling in their book to their own sweet will.
The reason for this the professor blame for the inaction of the state government not only to this present, but all the past government also responsible for this. The KAS from time to time they have met various governments to remind the only way to systematize the spelling in the khasi language need to constitute the state sabha Akademi having it autonomous power.
At present no one can blame to an author that their spelling in their book is wrong because there is no authority to streamline the spelling in the khasi language. Professor Majaw said “to do this we need to have the state sabha” and the state government has the authority to constitute. The blame for all this defect in the spelling is due to the in action of the state government to the khasi or what all of us know ka “ ktien Sohra” .
It was only on 2005 due to the pressure from the KAS the then chief minister of Meghalaya Mr DD Lapang brought the bill in the legislative assembly to officially made the khasi and Garo language as official language at the district level, but till date the state government has not sent the notification to the central government and to the Sahitya Akademi the autonomous body constituted by the government of India.
The professor (Majaw) revile that there are three school of thought which all these having their different opinion in the spelling in the khasi language. The three schools of thought are the Presbyterian, the seng khasi and the Catholic, and another chaos that add up to the khasi spelling is the induction of the khasi department in the north eastern hills university instead of correcting the problem it become another problem.
At the time when he is the president of the KAS he has written to the central body of the Khasi Student Union (KSU) and others organization on this regard so that they can strongly appeal to the state government to constitute the State Sabha Akademi, because this is the only authority who can streamline the spelling in the khasi language. In the effort of the KAS the two district council the Jaintia Hills District Autonomous Council and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council come forward to support.
The professor put the blame to the entire public representative how has no vision to let the khasi language recognized in the eight schedule of the Indian constitution. All the agitation let by different organization to demand that the khasi language should be include in the constitution will be meaningless until the state government constituted the State Sabha according to the direction given by the Sahitya Akademi.
These anomalies in the spelling will have a bad impact in the school, college and at the university level. The student is in dilemma which word is correct in the khasi spelling. He (Majaw) point out some spelling which authors used. “ ieit-ieid” “ ia-ya” “but-bud” “ tnad-tnat” this the few example.
