ASWA alleged Government is neglecting Garo dominated areas in West Khasi Hills

Shillong, May 30: Expressing concerned that the Garo dominated areas in West Khasi Hills have been neglected by the higher ups of the state authority, the Achik Student’s Welfare Association (ASWA) demanded immediate attention from the government.

In a letter submitted to the State Chief Minister, the ASWA demanded the government to to create a civil sub-division, C&RD block, re-open border-haats and set up a police station besides other demands

“Government should also extend its developmental initiatives in Ranikor and create a separate civil sub-division as Ranikor contributes a good amount in revenue generation,” the letter stated.

Other demands included widening, strengthening and black topping of Ranikor-Baghmara via Moheskolla PWD roads, make functional of Khonjoy PHC, electrification in the entire villages of Ranikor Constituency, safe drinking water, re-installation of MTC service from Moheskolla to Shillong via Ranikor, re-establishment of agriculture office at Khonjoy and setting up of State Bank of India or any other government undertaking bank branch at Nongjri.

According to ASWA, the present administration has failed to control matters related to anti-social elements and crimes affecting areas like Moheskola, Khonjoy besides coal rich areas like Nongjri Nonghylam Khulang  and Bagli which urgently needs an effective administrative machinery to address the issues.

Informing that there is an increase in extortions and other crimes in the coal rich areas, the organisation demanded the setting up of Police Station at Nongjri.

Stating that Khonjoy is the centre of all the villages in the entire border area of Ranikor constituency and the hub of business transaction ASWA said, “We strongly demand the government to create a new community and rural development block (C&RD) at Khonjoy.”

ASWA also demanded the reopening of the border haat at Bagli stating that it would restore economic and commercial ties between the people on both sides of the border.

“The initiative will further reduce the informal trade which exists between the two countries and open opportunities for greater bilateral trade,” ASWA added.(SP News)
