Shillong, June 26: As part of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking an Awareness Programme on “ Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking” as part of its initiative called the ‘Safe-Secure-Shillong’ was organized by the East Khasi Hills District Police at Shillong College, Shillong.
Highlighting the ill effects of drug abuse and illicit trafficking Dr Pakha Tesia, MD Neuro-Psychiatrist, Woodland Hospital, Shillong said that drugs abuse affect the physical and mental health of human being .
Presenting a PowerPoint presentation, Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said that there are two aspects of fighting drugs, demand reduction and supply reduction of which NGOs, Schools and doctors falls under the demand reduction while the police falls under the supply reduction.
Syiem listed a series of issues which posed as a challenge for the police to curb this menace stating that easy access to drugs like spasmoproxivan (SP), economic insolvency, unavailability of a proper counselling centres, psychiatrist, social unawareness on the stigmas and handling the peddler or user when apprehended by public and unemployment are some of the challenges.
S.A. Rynjah, MPS, Addl. S.P (Traffic), Shillong gave a speech on Traffic Awareness emphasizing on the need to abide by the Traffic rules and most important on the consequences of driving under influence of alcohol and drugs.
Meanwhile, M. Kharkrang, S.P East Khasi .Hills, Shillong also spoke on the occasion encouraging the students to abide by the law and to refrain from drugs.
He also stressed that the awareness programme is part of the efforts by the Police in making a “Safe-Secure-Shillong” and make the youths an asset to the society.(SP News)
