Shillong, August 25: Headquarters 101 Area celebrated Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) started on the 23th and end today the 25th recently . The chief guest, Mrs Chitralekha Sharma, President AFWWA, Eastern Air Command, Shillong was welcomed by Mrs Anupam Panwar, Regional President AWWA, 101 Area. The celebrations included Declamation Contest, Fashion Show, Flower Dance and a presentation by the students of ASHA School, a school for differently abled children. The celebration began with the traditional AWWA song that signifies the inner strength so inherent in all Indian women. Ten war widows, whose husbands laid down their lives for the country and an additional 23 widows settled in and around Shillong were felicitated.
The Chief Guest lauded the ladies of 101 Area for their various initiatives towards the empowerment of the Olive Green families. AWWA stands for `Sharing and Caring’ with abundant “Hope, Trust and faith”. A voluntary organization AWWA aims at the holistic development and well being of Army wives and children, as well as the rehabilitation of war widows and differently abled children. AWWA supplements the official welfare efforts of the Indian Army.
Mrs Anupam Panwar, inaugurated a handicraft mela at the Rhino Sajni Shopping Complex on 24 August 2013. The mela was a forum where items prepared in Vocational Training Centres of all the units of Shillong are put for sale. This forms part of the empowerment of the ladies to make them self dependent. The mela was open to public on 24 and 25 August 2013.
Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) is one of the largest registered NGOs of India, charted with a course of fulfilling societal obligation, social empowerment and skill building since its inception in 1966. It is a voluntary organisation, which aims at the holistic development and well being of Army wives and Children as well as the rehabilitation of war widows and differently abled children.(SP News)
